~ "I'll Be You", The Replacements. God, how I love them. It's sad I'll never get the chance to see the original group back together again -- Bob Stinson died way back in 1997 by drinking and drugging himself to death. He'd been long since replaced in the band, of course.
The fact that very few people truly know of them, of songs like "I Will Dare", "Favorite Thing", "Unsatisfied", "Can't Hardly Wait", "Bastards of Young", "Here Comes A Regular", "Left of The Dial", "Kiss Me On The Bus", "I'll Be You", "Alex Chilton", "Sixteen Blue", "Talent Show", and so on... they were some of the most brilliant songwriters in history. Chris Mars (drums), Paul Westerberg (vocals), and Tommy Stinson (bass) are all still alive. Tommy, you may have noticed, released a solo album recently that's pretty damn good. Of course, he was involved in that horrendous Guns N' Roses idea Axl had (at the VMA performance the band had, he's the one in the red and black plaid suit), so everything looks better by comparison. Paul's been on a solo kick since the moment the band broke up -- he's like the John Lennon of the group. Chris, he's joined up with several other bands through the post-Mats years. But, maybe, some day, three-fourths of the original equation will tour again.
They were the greatest rock band of the 80's. Bless 'em.
