The only time I've been on white water was on an inflatable raft, with other children and two instructors. it was great, but while we were walking back up the river we saw an unconscious man being hauled by a couple of other men, from his kayack on to a rock, which we imagine he'd smashed in to just a minute earlier. Frightening stuff! He turned out to be all right, just a little concussed. It looks fantastic if you're good enough to avoid collisions with rocks though!
