It is disgusting to me, that in 2008 we are still discriminating against a group of people in this country and not only pushing them to the edges of society, but taking away their rights. I am referring of course to Prop 8 in California, Amendment 2 in Florida, and Prop 102 in Arizona. All proposed Constitutional Amendments stating that marriage is only recognized as "one man and one woman" also providing that no other equivilant shall be recognized. Meaning Gay people do not have the same rights as straight people. It's worse in CA because they just approved legal same-sex marriages THIS YEAR!
These changes are all referred to as "Marriage Protection Acts". Protection? From who? GAYS? Because a gay person's love is not the same as a straight persons? So we're now going to legislate love? But let's be honest, this is not a moral issue, it's a Christian issue and if I'm not mistaken there is a clear seperation of Church and State written into our US Constitution. This is not about saving anything, this is a bunch of jesus freaks thinking gay people are icky and sinful, just like 45 years ago with anti-miscegenation laws; where whites were not allowed to marry blacks. And don't tell me its different, it's exactly the same, you're trying to tell somebody they can't love and marry someone and have the same access to rights that you have because you don't agree with their lifestyle.
Let's break this down. So they want to "Protect Marriage". Straight Marriage, excuse me... Show me the data that says straight couples are more moral and honest than gay couples. Show me the data that children of straight couples are better citizens than those of gay couples. You want to protect the sanctity of marriage, BAN DIVORCE! Ban Drive-Thru wedding chapels in Vegas! Ban shows like "The Bachelor" and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire". You're telling me those things don't hurt the image of marriage but a girl wanting to marry a girl does? You'd rather have a loveless straight marriage than a loving gay one? You'd rather parents divorce leaving the child in limbo than have that same child be cared for by 2 loving people just because they happen to be the same sex? YOU are immoral. I can search the internet and in 1 minute come up with 100 stories of straight couples abusing each other, their children, murdering spouses, spousal sexual abuse and who are these ppl, straight people. So don't try and tell me gay marriage will ruin the "Sanctity" of marriage because it's not there when the divorce rate is almost 50% and increases by 12% with each re-marriage. Dont' tell me gay people ruin kids... Jeffrey Dahmer's parents were straight, Charles Manson's parents were straight, Hitler's parents were straight. Where is your data? Oh but you say gays can have "Civil Unions" which is the seperate but equal. Seperate but Equal. Gee that sounds familiar... Oh that's right, they did that to blacks. Where they can have access to the same drinking water but have to use a different fountain. Why are you so afraid to just call it "marriage." Because of tradition? At one time, stoning adulterers to death was tradition; human sacrifice was tradition, public hangings were tradition, times change. Should we call inter-racial marriage something else or inter-faith marriages or inter-culture marriages? To save the word, what's next Germans can't marry Asians, Jews can't marry Buddhists, Californians can't marry Texans, those are silly right? So is trying to ban same-sex marriage. It's not gonna hurt you or your marriage or the idea of it. Marriage is two people in love wanting to share their lives under the eyes of the law. Civil Unions? That's Seperate but Equal which was deemed unconstitutional in the Supreme Court case Brown v Board of Education and later anti-miscegenation was found unconstitutional. THIS IS TOO!
These Amendments to State Constitutions, take away the Civil Rights of people, yes they are Civil Rights. As defined by American Heritage:
A broad range of privileges and rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and subsequent amendments and laws that guarantee fundamental freedoms to all individuals. These freedoms include the rights of free expression and action ; the right to enter into CONTRACTS, own property, and initiate lawsuits; the rights of due process and equal protection of the law;
And what is marriage but a CONTRACT! Freedoms to ALL individuals, not just straight one. So don't tell me gays want special rights or this isn't a civil liberties issue, this is the DEFINITION of a civil liberties issue, same-sex couples just want the SAME rights as everybody else just like women did, just like blacks did.
It's a slippery slope to be taking away people's rights because it sets a precedent to more and worse laws to be enacted and someday it will be YOUR freedoms, YOUR rights, maybe even YOUR marriage. Laws like this cannot stand in a free republic, these are unconstitutional and it is truly upsetting to see people duped into voting for them through lies, deceit, and fear. They won't force kids to be taught gay marriage just like they don't force kids to be taught any other marriage. Churches won't be forced to oversee gay weddings, they can legally turn away anyone they want. Gay marriage won't hurt children because children don't care. You know what DOES hurt kids, teaching them hatred, intolerance, that some people are different and bad because they're not like you.
