The new Deftones CD is just not doing it for me. Could it be that my tastes in music are broadening or sharpening? The group just doesn't hit my ear like it did two years ago. It's not like I'm a musician or anything, so I know it's not some egotistical stance. After listening to that I popped in an "oldie but goodie" by Nels Cline and Gregg Bendian. The CD is a tribute to John Coltrane's Interstellar Space. Just a guitar and drums and a lot of fucking chops. This piece just blew the Deftones cd out of the water as far as "attention grabbing" and "massive ball kicking" goes. The same feelings have been popping up in movies lately as well. I have absolutely no interest in seeing the MATRIX or X2 but I'm ready and willing to pop 30 bones on this DVD "The Seventh Seal". It's an old flick directed by Ingmar Berman and it stars a young Max Von Sydow. The premise of that movie alone just washed over any kind of super duper techno machine gun clusterfuck. One paragraph describing a man's decision to play a game of chess against DEATH to decide his fate just had me sold. That seems so fucking macho. I haven't even seen this movie and I'm geeked like a 14 year old boy finding a stash of Hustler magazines. I'm totally convinced you can get two rock solid minds, one digital camera, and make the best movie of the year. It has to be that simple. Maybe I'm just tired of being categorized and told what to watch and when to watch it. The whole "digging" metallity is going to make me a pauper sucking dicks for Criterion Collection DVDS. Speaking of digging, I'm heading up to Ann Arbor on Wed. to find some records and whatnot. I plan on drinking overpriced bear and scarfing some grease at the New York Pizza joint. I need to score some more free jazz shit on CD or wax. Get me some screaching saxophones, clickety clank clank improvised drums, creepy ass bass noodlings, and some viking banshee chanting. One could get carried away thinking about it. Perhaps it is time to drink a case of Labatt and howl at the moon. Cry out for my animal brothers. JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ. Sorry, when I'm in a good mood the writing is less entertaining. Maybe I can pick an arguement with someone and make up for this lost time.
