WOW, what a relief! After 38 years I finally figured out what is really the matter with me. There was something terribly important missing from my life. Like a big empty Captain Beefheart size hole in my sole. The goal of last night's motorcycle ride was to bring home one single good cd. Something that I've been meaning to check out for a long time but never have, preferably something old and established with solid references from friends with good taste. Enter the Captain and his magic band with their celebrated debut long player from 1967, Safe as Milk:






anytime in the past when someone has mentioned Ry Cooder the blues guitarist my response would either be laughter, ridicule or more often just ignoring the remark entirely. not that he's not a good guitar player, it's just the same old white bread smooth blues that's such a festering sore on American music history. Now I'll have to give the guy a bit of credit at least.

I haven't read the liner notes, I got stuff to do today so I'm just going to keep listening. But on the middle page in bold letters there's a quote: "may the baby jesus shut your mouth and open your mind" that would make such a lovely tattoo. maybe have the baby jesus holding a little baseball bat.
