I had a long day meeting lots of dogs, I now want several. I had an early appontment at the B.C. shelter, then I went down to Henderson Animal control, then on to the main Las Vegas shelter (655 N. Mojave).

I was very impressed with the facility's design, not fancy but well thought out, very practical. I LOVE it when a utilitarian building shows real thought to promote it's purpose and intentional lack of frills. Have I ever discussed my fascination with utilitarian round barns or the Shaker ideals of economy and practicality in design? -for the latter I looked for some web reference but was disgusted at how everyone reduces what they held so serious as to be a moral imperative down to "shaker style", ie. a fashion novelty. Anyhow, the adoption portion of the shelter is extremely well suited to it's purpose, obviously without undue expense, and I guarantee more animals go home with owners as a result. Hats off to the architects. Found this picture (of the model) of the complex:

I spent time with a bunch of dogs and finally with some difficulty decided on one. He appears to be a St. Bernard/Rotwieler mix, but is slightly smaller than you'd expect of an average Rot, so there's got to be a small dog in there somewhere. There were dogs who I initially wanted more, some REALLY cool looking unusual dogs that I couldn't take my eyes off, but this guy seemed so completely well adjusted and content that I just know he'll be a superb companion & should get along with Oscar well. He's very calm and gentle, but he's playful too. He's a year old (their best guess at least). He still needed Neutered & microchipped, so I go back to pick him up tomorrow. Check this out- all the shots, neutering, microchipping + one free vet visit if I took him to a participating vet - I've got an appointment at my vet down the street instead- and $50 is the total bill. That's damned cheap. I guess small dogs are $150 since they're easier to place.

Also, I did get a new camera, so pictures of
Winston Churchill
General George S. Patton
Otis
Vincent
Norton
Norvin
Triton
Dante
Homer
Milton
Mayor
Porter
Bishop
or
Vicar
will be along shortly after the dog iteslf.
Personally, on the subject of names I'm leaning toward

I read an article about the main shelter in Popular Science about how environmentally friendly it is in its setup. As far as names go, I like Milton or just Winston. biggrin
