Separated the motor from the tranny. Tranny fluid is very clean, motor looks pretty clean inside too. I gotta swap oil pans & pick ups anyhow, rearsump on motor, car takes front sump. Got it very cheap, but the fella couldn't tell me what it came out of. pulled the intake, it's a roller cam block:
Used a mirror in the intake valley to find the head numbers up underneath. E6SE. Ford has made some shitty heads, but those are among the worst . They were a one year attempt at a swirl type combustion chamber, the problem is that the intake valve is shrouded around two thirds of it's diameter. You can't do anything to make it flow aside from enlarging the combustion chamber which drops compression a lot. Not so big a deal, I've got a set of ported 351 heads that are better & will bolt right up. I was just hoping not to get that far into the motor right now. I measured the 351 heads' chamber volume, 68cc. That'll give me 9.07:1 compression which is perfect for what I'm thinking. I should be fine running 87 octane, maybe 89 during July & August though. I'm shooting for 20 mpg with the overdrive, but it's also gotta be a fun car or what's the point? got all this stuff used at swap meets over the years: hooker comps, edelbrock dual plane intake, 560 holley w/ vac. secondaries, generic performance mufflers, crane's budget roller rockers. Only thing I'm buying aside from a gasket set is a shift kit & front seal for the tranny. Well, I'll probably pick a new cam, since it's a roller I won't have to buy new lifters. It's going to be a dog with the stock rear end gearing though. may not even pull overdrive well, we'll see. I gotta go over to the work yard & check the gearing on the rear I took out of the fastback. There's always the chance the previous owner geared it down, but I'm not holding my breath.
