Here is the news article about my grandfather's death.
This is the first time I've looked at a picture of him since he died.
He was truly an amazing person, fighting racism, helping families, treating the poor. And he did it all while fighting chronic severe depression. He tried to kill himself more than once. In the 50's, he voluntarily underwent heavy ECT, trying simply to fix his head.
He was born on a farm, and put himself through medical school at Vanderbilt. He challenged me through his simple existence to be even remotely as successful as he was in life. Hell, sometimes he challenged me just by making me want to prove him wrong.
He thought my tattoos were "very well done," even though he disapproved on a basic level.
He always listened when we talked, and was sincerely interested in my life all of the time. He taught me to play chess until I was good enough to beat him.
He constantly encouraged me not to give up.
