Last night we were supposed to have leftovers for dinner and to tell the truth they really were not that great the first time around. I should know as I was the one who cooked them the first time and forced my family to consume them on Sunday. Not sure what went wrong but the pasta vegetable soup gumbo recipe turned out more like pasta paste and gunk with vegetables on the side. It was not really fit for human consumption the first time around but we try and eat our experiments before burying them. This experiment is now resting happily in the compost pile and will return to Mother Earth. So last night I gathered the wife and boys and announced that we were heading out to eat instead of dining on the luxurious and potential hazardous leftovers. Their cheers could be heard I am sure all over the neighborhood. To add to their excitement I decided to shake things up even further. We headed to the small strip mall near our house and went first to the ice cream store. That is right. We had our dessert first. Truth be told it was yogurt with fruit but damn it we still had dessert first. What a revolutionary I have become. First getting rid of leftovers for the day and then having dessert before dinner. What kind of father have I become and what kind of example am I setting for my sons? A good one I hope. After consuming our desserts we then walked the strip mall and went to Subway for dinner. Again the cheap and frugal father appeared. Two foot long veggie de-lites for 5 bucks a piece with 2 drinks and 2 chips. We are not a family that drinks a lot of carbonated drinks and so we share the drinks and the same with the chips. The total bill for dinner and desserts for a family of 4 was under $25. Everybody was full and the best part was walking back to the car. Wife and I arm in arm while the kids ran around us making fun of us old people being in love. And that was priceless. I may have to cook that pasta vegetable soup gumbo more often!
