Global warming causes people in Chicago to shoot other people. This past weekend in Chicago, Illinois, over 50 people were shot due to above average temperatures. It seems that as the weather get warmer in Chicago and people are out and about that the heat makes people shoot each other. Of course this is a simplistic explanation but for the past several years whenever the outside temperature rises in one of Americas large urban centers so do the number of gun shootings. Maybe the United States government should institute a program to buy back guns in exchange for air conditioners. Turn in a heater, a rod, a gun, and get a nice 5000 b.t.u. air conditioner in exchange to keep your apartment or house cool. The mayor of Chicago Richard Daley is a strong anti-gun advocate and yet his city remains a haven of gun violence. He will rail against gun violence and then blame it on the gangs and the code of silence in the neighborhoods. At the same time he is reducing police services or providing them only in the well to do or downtown neighborhoods. Cut education, preschool and after school programs and instead focus on attracting more business. But Chicago is not the only city with too many problems to address in one blog or to tackle in one day. We need to reshape, refocus, and rethink our policies and priorities. The world is interdependent. If you do not believe that then just look at the financial markets and how the fall of the so-called PIGS could bring down the European Union and the euro. Or look at how BPs failure in the Gulf of Mexico is going to threaten not only the environment in the Gulf but also that along the eastern coast of the United States and then the eastern coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean current is going to take the oil up to New England and across the ocean to the United Kingdom and Europe. Then we will see how the Brits respond to BPs inaction. So we live in an interdependent world and what affects one affects us all. We cannot ignore what happens miles away as far off events do impact us. If the county next door allows poison to be dumped into the ground some day you may find that poison in your drinking water. If we allow farmers to use pesticides and fertilizers on their farms then one day you may find a dead zone in your river delta. Just take time to pay attention to the world around you. It is the only world we have.
