What is the truth? Has a politician ever opened his mouth and told the truth, the whole truth, without shading it in his favor? Can we believe anymore what we read in a government publication, in the newspaper, or online? Who can you trust? When I jump on the bus everyday I place my life in the hands of the bus driver. Can I trust him to show up sober and clean to perform his job of driving the bus? What about the other drivers of vehicles on the street? How many of them can I trust not to text as they drive, not to drink and drive, not to be distracted or negligent drivers? As I jump off at my stop and join the mass of humanity on the sidewalk whom can I trust? Who or where is the pickpocket today, the rapist, the robber, the scam artist, the banker, the petroleum company official? I stop at the corner deli for a juice and a bagel. The sign says fresh squeezed o.j. Can I trust the sign? It tastes like something that has been bottled. The juice not the sign. The sign for the bagel says made fresh daily. It tastes stale. The bagel not the sign. But the sign says the bagel is made fresh daily. It does not say which day my bagel was made. Who can you trust? I reach my office and enter my little slice of heaven. I turn on the lights and they flicker and sputter but finally come on. You have to trust the landlord that something in the building will work as the a.c. clearly is not. People filter in, your coworkers and clients. Which of them do you trust? Some want your job and some your help but many of them are not going to be truthful with you. They will tell you what they think you need to know, what they think you want to hear, and lots of bullshit. Your job is to wade through it all looking for some modicum of truth. Funny thing is when you get home you look at your spouse and kids and wonder when they began lying to you as well. When was the first time the love of your life gave you their version of the truth? When and how did that sweet young thing learn to look you in the eye and tell you everything but the entire truth? One day the baby that looked so adorable on your knee will stand up look at you and lie. I did not do it, someone else did. But then why shouldnt our little bundle of joy lie to us when we perpetuate the lie about Santa and the Easter Bunny. It is all an adult con to make little children behave in the weeks and days leading up to Christmas and Easter. Again what is the truth? Is it too hard for us to be honest? Does honesty have anything to do with the truth?
