Posted on OKCupid, but quite a bit of it seems just as relevant here:
- You should never start off anything with, "I never know what to say in these things." Or any statement like it. You're here to communicate, don't start off by refusing to actually say something about yourself.
- When people have anything in their profile saying they're brutally honest, or need someone who can handle honesty, my first thought it, "You might just need to learn tact and some basic human sympathy." Honesty can easily be an act of cruelty or aggression.
- The fact that you're sarcastic is not noteworthy.
- I skip all paragraphs discussing your taste in music. It's irrelevant to me. Music preferences are so idiosyncratic and cover so much ground that it's irrelevant for the purposes of finding out if we have things in common.
- Complaining is perfectly acceptable if you make it interesting. If we're going to bitch about our lives, let's try and keep it fun.
- I would sincerely like my friends to stop turning into substance abusers who get indignant and paranoid when I don't want to join them. Being insecure about the substance they use to escape the misery they could easily change rather than dope themselves into submission does not mean they can give me the after school special pushy sales pitch. I've been out of high school for almost a decade for god sakes, this shouldn't be an issue.
- These bullet points help me clear my head. I should do it more often.
