What a fun day at work
Well yesterday started off like any other day offshore aboard the Maersk Attender. Came on deck and done some maintenance then dove the ROV, to begin working. Well on the way back up from 7000' our levelwind decided that it wanted to malfunction and start to smoke, So an all stop on that till we figured out what was going on. must have just be really low on grease because we replaced what we thought was bad and nope it looked good. But any way after that whole greasy fiasco, it was decide to get the compatts (survey equipment) that we are setting down on bottom overboard and on there way down. This is where the fun all began. LOL Well the seas were about 5-7' not to bad really, but bad enough that created all the fun. Well the crane lifted the basket which the compatts were in, to begin to overboard it, It started to swing so instead of lowering it right now in the water. The lovely crane operator let is swing to an angle of about 50 degrees and then payout on the cable to lower it in the water. well that allowed it to swing back down and hit the water with so much force that is through a wave of water to the bow of the boat almost 200 feet away, which also broke the tywraps holding the compatts in the basket. So now they needed to recover the basket back to deck and re-secure them well by this time the big block on crane was violently swinging back and forth at a high rate of speed. so they swing the basket over to the side of the boat to calm down the swinging and figure out how to get it on deck safely, well they decide to hook a tugger wire up to it to try to control the swing. so they start to lift the basket back up to place on deck and as soon as they got it up the block started to swing again this time with the basket was swinging just as violently in the air, It ended up hit the crane pedestal and side of the boat a few times before finally coming to a rest on the deck. Then instead of placing the big block down in the water to get it stop swinging (the slings on the basket were plenty long enough) the crane operator decides to let it rest against the side of the boat stop it from swinging, well bad idea. it hit the bullworks (railing and stuff on the side of the boat) and knocked it completely off the boat and down it went 7000' to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. It was really quite comical after all. No one got hurt which was very good thing. and to think i almost grabbed my camera to film it coming back on board cause we knew it was gonna be crazy. But I didn't, however i did take some pictures of the aftermath.
I know its blurry hard to get a good picture when the waves are covering it up every few seconds

Here is the basket sitting in its final resting place. notice the side of the boat is gone.

Here is another view of the missing side
