listening to this morning

Remedy by Seether
Come on, Come In by Velvet Revolver (damn is Weiland looking scarier and scarier these days)
Enjoy the Silence by Lacuna Coil (one of the best versions of that song ever. her voice is just amazing)

good weekend. yet ANOTHER freak cold front through Texas. this time in April. at this rate the new Ice Age should be here by mid June. It was a good drill weekend as far as they go. M203 range and played on the Army's "qual" range...fun little pop up targets with a computerized scoring system. much more advanced the the USMC version where some guy pulls your target down and has to look to see if you hit it and then wave a red "lollipip" sign to show you if you hit. after dark driving and patrolling with night vision gear...always fun...and a pain in the ass. the usual stuff. woke up Sunday morning with a quarter inch of frost covering my sleeping bag and all my gear. ugh. it's really funny. three more of my Marines got promoted this week. This won't make much sense to anyone not military, but my "platoon" of 12 now includes a Capt. an E7, an E6, an E5 (me), 5 E4s, and only three E3s. translation: buncha chiefs...handful of Indians. speaking of Indians (other kind), they want me to help train a unit from the Indian Army in October? probably won't take that one on. already have a trip planned for that month. would have been interesting. but then again they are doing a winter mountain training package...no thank you.

now back to another week of work.

Dad seems to be doing well. the main thing right now, I guess, is keeping his spirits up through his treatment. I'll have to get down to visit him this week.

watched Eragon last night. even though everyone I've read has warned me away from it. It was on my netflix list and I still have great respect for Jeremy Irons and Malkovich. I'm just wondering how the hell they got themselves into this one. I think someone sold it to them as the next LOTR trilogy.

it wasn't a bad movie really. the cheese factor was rather high, as I really expect from a fantasy movie (telepathic female dragons anyone?). but it was certainly derivitave. I definitely noticed all the comparisons to Star Wars (young farm boy with unknown parentage growing up on Uncle's farm....a hidden "magical" talent, an older war-weary mentor in the ways of the magic etc. looks like they set it up for a trilogy but it'll never happen.

being the political geek that I am, I am watching the approaching "election" in Russia with interest. Since Yeltsin, Russia has gone to having a lower life expectancy than Pakiston, half the population of the US (and shrinking and almost 3/4 of a million a year), and a GDP lower than Mexico. Interestingly the number of former military in the political leadership has gone from about a fifth to more than three quarters under Putin (what a fun name to say). Anyhow. I started studying Russian in high school, so this is a longstanding interest. It seems almost that Russia is devolving into it's 17th century form....with a nuclear stockpile.

ack. got to get to work.
