Re-edited to say: SHIT!
It's ok. My set is back.

----

Without wishing to sound as though I'm making with the anti-American sentiments, I have been wondering. Considering that the art of the cocktail was pretty much pioneered in America, why is it that today the US influence on specific cocktails is exactly what makes them shit?

Case 1: the margaritas Carmady and I had in New York were all mixed with one sweet liqueur or another, which is, obviously, bastardising the original drink. I'll admit. If you didn't know a margarita was meant to be sour, these wouldn't have tasted bad. They weren't as low as American-esque chain bars over here, which use sugar syrup and lime cordial for Christ's sake. But they were still served in highball glasses without a salt rim. :frowns:
Case 2: I had a Brandy Alexander. It should have been served in a martini glass, with a sprinkle of nutmeg. It should be brandy and crme de cacao, mixed with double cream, but it was brandy and baileys mixed with milk. It came in a pint glass. Filled up with ice! CHRIIIIIISSSSSSSST!!!! Fucking watered-down shit.

Anyway, we arrived in New York on Friday lunchtime, and left on Tuesday evening. What we did in between has become a little bit confused in my mind, but I know we saw lots of art, including this, amongst a lot of others, and I got bollocked by one member of staff for putting my nose too close to one of the canvases. We saw Rent on Broadway, which although it had some astonishing singers in it was also far more heavy-going than anyone told me it would be. We also saw this, which was Carmady's request and in my opinion full evidence of his outstanding geekery, but let me tell you, it was greaaaat. biggrin

We had some very interesting food too, and I don't mean interesting in a euphemistic sense. I might even post some recipes if I can work them out for myself.

I also remember we prowled around Central Park a bit. I also know I had a horrible, horrible hangover on the second day, on account of those watered-down American cocktails I'd been drinking the night before. I enjoyed a guided tour we had around the Lower East Side. Oh! Moby has a caf serving all kinds of exotic and fruit-based tea. It's called teany, and it's nice.

I've got a new dress which has every colour of the rainbow on it, some jeans which cost ten dollars each, and a funny hat with stripes on it. Hoho! I'm fond of hats.

I thought it was a bit odd, standing on the platform at Birmingham International at 8.30am, but it was better to be just going to bed at that time, as opposed to just having got up. I didn't actually intend on going to bed; I had plans for going for a picnic on Cannon Hill park and other nice things, but by 11am I sort of had the shakes a bit so I tucked myself in. I slept until 6pm, and THEN, like somebody crazy, I went for a ballet lesson.

It was my first ballet class for 15 years, not including a couple of one-off sessions I went to as a student which don't really count. The teacher prodded at me and told me my shoulders were wrong and my legs were turned out wrong and my weight was distributed wrong. There are only about 8 or 9 of us in the class, which is nice, and I think there might only be 3 or 4 of us left at the end of term, because I noticed a couple of huffy faces about the place, these faces being attached to the bodies of people who didn't like being prodded at.

Anyway, after that I drank some champagne, then I went back to bed.

* Given the state my bedroom was in five days ago, I think the state it's in now is a pretty big accomplishment.

* Barclays have given me 220 as a 'goodwill' payment even though they are in no way liable for the claims I made against them.

* A whole week, and no word yet on the manuscript. I have no nails left.

And you? Busy? Lazy? Enjoying the sun?
