see humanity there

have you ever sat
in the lobby
of a section 8
apartment building?
watched the people
wallk-shuffle-wheel by
fried out ex-junky
stoned pot fiend
coke whore
feable diabetic ambutee
unemployed
poor
tired
happy?
not much

have you ever
wandered a hospital?
seen the blank faces
the downtrodden
the overjoyed
the catatonic
the dead
hurting
feeling again
not feeling anymore
waiting

there is always waiting
waiting for the call
waiting for the day
waiting for a score
waiting to come down
how many times
have you heard
someone say
"if only i had something
then i could be happy"
what something?
money
love
posessions
and still
we are all waiting

for the happiness
for the sadness
feeling
emotion
living
is what we all want
it is all
that humanity
longs for

See, I thought for sure it was used near the end of one of the chapters in some paragraph of thoughtful poetic rambling. I haven't read any Gould and so I could have sworn it was from Darwin. Maybe not...maybe I absorbed it somewhere else and can't remember exactly where now.
