I can honest to god say I know what you mean. I had to explain to my 5 year old why she couldnt go to her dads wedding after he told her she could.
Im a mommy everyday whether my kids are around me or not. Ask dmuff. He teases me about acting like a mom to everyone (not in a bad way though) morelike in theway where its obvious that i care about everyone.

I once had to drive home with my two crying step-children with big wet tears running down their faces trying to explain to them why mommy didn't come to pick them up for Easter weekend. I've been there. Done that. I could rant and rave about things my hubby's ex has done, but naw. Just take a big step over the big pile your ex left of the carpet for you to clean up. Don't slander mommy in front of the kids and just say "this just gives us more time to be together" and do what you're doing or as I did. We made peanut butter apples and as a treat we had a soda and watched Star Wars that weekend. Sure it took them a while to get over the disapointment, but what they remembered was we were there for them.
I really recommend that you and my Relevantswitch talk. You could get a lot of good advice from some one almost in the same exact sitch as you. The kids were 3 and 5 when I met them.
