SPOILERS! (Click to view)

Valentines is fast approaching. It is such a funny holiday really. Or funny as in peoples reactions to the day. Unlike many of you, I dont dislike it, however, Im not so keen on what its become. When you attach so much romantic meaning to a day, it becomes tricky:

-Should one express affection and risk intentions being misconstrued? (Awkward.)

-How about adding a clarifying statement to avoid confusion? Last time I checked there was not a big market in I LOVE YOU, BUT NOT IN THAT WAY cards. (Awkward again, and presumptuous.)

-Do you say nothing and risk your friends going the whole day feeling unappreciated? (Thats more sad than awkward.)

-Does using a luv, luff or fluff tone down the meaning to its appropriate level?

-What if you do love someone but havent gotten to that stage yet? What if you are unsure if feelings are requited? Then Valentines can be even worse, no? All of the agony of love, and none of the benefits!! Do you send a card, buy flowers? What if nothing is returned? Did you just make a complete prat of yourself? In this respect I think I prefer the cultures which embrace the role of a secret admirer. You know an unsigned card full of sentimental musing in the postbox, or unclaimed token of affection. Theres a sweetness in that versus the ring..ring..cha-chinging of the cash registers as lovers attempt to curry favor through commerce.

I love you. Be mine.
Such simple words, however, if you re like me its not so easy to have those words roll off the tongue or off the fingertips during normal times, much less during manufactured holidays. And the net, if anything, the openness and anonymity of the net leaves me even more guarded in their usage.

Amidst the cornucopia of opportunities, online and otherwise, I tend to save those sorts of sentiments for just one and not in response to some date on the calendar.

-And what about the Polys out there? Where is your card?
Be mine. You too. or "Be ours." or "Be with us but we make no claims to you." I havent seen that situation quite covered.

&#$%@! Maybe I do hate Valentine s, afterall. But, I luff all of you who count yourselves amongst my friends. I luff you all a lot. Even fluff some of you too. I hope you all remember that when the 14th rolls around, and hope that you realize you have value to us here even if no roses, or heart shaped boxes, or the gift of diamonds appears on your real world doorstep.

I have never been one for gifts when it comes to Valentines Day. I think love is its own reward and who you share it with make it special. Thats priceless...well to me at least.
