This morning, at about 3 am, I realized the stark difference between North Minneapolis (where I'd been living before) and Portland. In Minneapolis, anytime that two carloads of young, pants-sagging, self-described niggaz emptied out in front of my house and started yelling, I would get on the floor so as not to be hit by a stray bullet. This morning, after about ten minutes of them being loud, I ventured a peek out the window. They were hugging. They'd all stopped their cars in front of my house for a boisterous 3 am hug.

This world does not make sense to me. Is it wrong that the hugging scares me just a little bit more than the bullets?

Hey there! Been a little while, but I've been keeping up with your entries. But yeah about Monkey, it just seems like a very few people have either the innate, or learned (or both) ability to create art like nothing heard of before. But Peter Gabriel has done both that and created something that stirs our animal natures. (i.e., his art really rocks.) It can be appreciated both on a purely evolved, intellectual level, and with our primordial instincts. Gabriel's a genius and creative savant, to be sure, but in all fairness, it took him three records to make his pinnacle, Security, though his third album is very nearly as good.

Anyway, no I agree, the hugging you describe above is a bit creepier than the live rounds going off. I imagine if I was there with you, it would have reminded me of the children who all have Richard James' face in the Aphex Twin video for Come To Daddy.

Big Fan is good, not great. Oswalt does do a competent job, however.
