The cough tickled his throat. He let it out, but it was still there in wait. Wanted to see what the weather was like outside of his mouth; decided to stay in and wait it out.

The cough didn't like him. The cough was also chickenshit. Fairly fucking obvious, since he'd nursed this cough for years. Caught it in '92. Never really left. Like an unwanted roommate, like a bitchy girlfriend, like a desperate wife. Free to check out anytime it wanted to. Never fucking left.

He looked up at his surroundings. Same apartment, same as yesterday. Same as ten years ago. What the fuck.

"Must be nice being jaded," he thought aloud to the yellowing walls. "Must be nice to be able to complain about shit. Complainings a luxury y'know. Can't complain when your home's getting the shit shelled out of it. Nope, not at all."

He looked out the broken window to the street below. Empty, this time of morning. Same old smells. Urine, desperation, and garbage.

"Same shit today, same shit tomorrow." He pulled down his boxers and peed out the window.

Someone might've been screaming below, but he was already asleep.
