Hehe, I suppose it does make a difference. I know for sure that one of the two SAs that I had encountered before was Afrikaaner, and even though he was trying to speak English, his pronunciation was so odd (to my ears) that I could hardly understand anything. Not sure if the other one was also Afrikaaner, or an English-speaking SA, but I had trouble understanding him as well.
It's odd, because I'm fairly good at interpreting various accents; I can understand an English Yorkshire accent very well, and same with a Cajun accent here in Louisiana (if you really want to hear the English language butchered, you need to hear a Cajun accent
