I caught a guy trying to hang himself with his shoelaces at work today. We moved him to suicide precaution before he could finish the attempt. Something about the holidays that makes everyone want to kill themselves. We've had quite a wave of suicide attempts lately and one that was successful.

No, we can't arrest people. I'm a correctional officer at the county jail. I'm not a police officer and the two departments are separate entities. Correctional officers don't have police powers, at least not in the county I work in.

I'm sure some people do get something positive out of it, but sadly a large portion of the inmates are repeat offenders. The focus of our facility isn't rehabilitation because it's a pretrial facility (around 500 total people, but as many as 800). We only have a handful of inmates that have been sentenced, so we focus more on short term programs.

and yea, we do wear uniforms. The standard issue ones are a kind of cross between a police officer and a mailman uniform. If you are on the Special Operations team you get Navy blue BDU uniforms like they wear in the military. The BDU uniform looks much cooler.

I never really thought I would be doing a job like this, but I enjoy it most of the time. Not sure if it's something I want to do forever though. smile

You saved that guy's life... and hopefully he'll reach a point where he appreciates it. Maybe, he'll re-think things... It sounds like your work can be rather "heavy" sometimes. Is it a pretty violent environment or are most of the inmates pretty easy to handle?
Out of curiosity...if you weren't at the detention center, what else could you picture yourself doing ?(besides being a rich European.) smile

How was your New Year! I was a little hung over today...did nothing all day and don't feel a bit guilty about it!

I had to clean out the garage today. It's still not perfect, but considering the age of the building and the crappy state it is currently in, I think a good job was done.

Now it's on to the laundry. Have to go back to work tomorrow. Have a good night.

biggrin

Tomorrow, New Year's day also doubles as Laundry Day for me.

I had a really long day today and I didn't sleep well last night, so I think I'll be going to bed before the New Year officially starts.

For all you party people out there, I hope you have a safe & fun night. Cheers. surreal

hehe effigy. Sounds like you are having a good time though, so I guess that can qualify as a party-- sorta.

I went to the park this morning. It was cool outside and the tide was low so I could go running on the beach.

The ground was still frozen in places but the sun was warming everything up. It's been raining a lot here this year, so the ground was pretty muddy in spots.

biggrin

We've been pretty soggy this year for sure! I'm hoping our snow levels are low. Don't mean to be an anti-snow Grinch, but people don't handle inclement weather well around here.
It was lovely outside today. We could even open the front door to my store without fear of it getting too cold inside. Nice days like today make me fear for what may be to come! (Call me paranoid.) eeek
