I never activate the bank/atm cards with my checking account. I got royally screwed over one time by a bank because of one those things, so I'm very distrustful of banks. If it were possible to exist in today's society without a bank account, I would, but it's written into most state's employment laws that employers can pay employees by check, and therefore, a bank account is needed to change that piece of paper into usable currency.
Credit cards aren't bad as long as one never purchases something unless they have the cash-in-hand to pay it off on the next billing cycle. I only got in trouble with my previous card because I had been unemployed for several months, and couldn't make payments. Most of the offers I get have no monthly or yearly fees for the card, so if you don't use it, you don't owe them anything.
