Rugrats, Rollergirls, and a Guy Named Felix
I've come to the conclusion that the kids have it out for me and my desire to write. I've been paying more attention and it never fails that I can surf the internet uninterupted for an hour, but if I start typing, they have to concoct some reason to interupt me. It's maddening, because they'll lull me into a false sense of security, making me think "Well, they're being pretty good so I guess I can get some writing done." Then I start writing and three sentences in they will start fighting or need something or have something they want to tell me.
Last night I tagged along with Wyspurr and katfireblade to their Rollergirls practice so that I could do some photographing. That was a lot of fun. I learned a hell of a lot about my camera trying to adjust it to the lighting. Trying to take pictures in a rollerskating rink is like trying to take pictures at rock concert...the lighting won't be the same from one moment to the next. It was also my first attempt at action photography. Photographing a roller derby scrimmage is much different from someone sitting still for you. I really enjoyed it though and hope to do it some more in the future.
Yesterday afternoon I went for a stroll around Little Five Points. I just wandered around for about half an hour yacking on my cellphone with my mother until this black guy who looked like a poor Mr. T that had eaten all of his A-Team teammates stopped asked me if I wanted him to draw my portrait. I have a vain fascination with being drawn so I got off the phone and took him up on that. So he whipped out some markers and drew a pretty decent likeness of me in about two minutes. I also got a bit of a look at some of the other stuff he drew and talked to him for a while. I liked what I saw and thought his style would mesh well with the comic company holierthancow and I are starting, so I gave him my card. It would nice to have an inker who is local on the team, especially since it's been a couple of months since we've heard from Loki about that last batch of Hardcore pages we sent him to be inked. The guy's name was Felix and he seemed to like the idea of working with us...even in the thankless job of inker.
In other news, someone was kind enough to donate $10 to Roth & Earl so that we wouldn't lose our hosting and someone else was kind enough to loan me $50 to get me through 'til payday next week. It's going to be annoying having to pay back $150 in borrowed money next Tuesday, but it won't hurt us too bad since we haven't missed any time on this next paycheck. I'd really underestimated how much taking time off work for Fantasm would hurt our budget but it'll be straightened out soon.
Editted to add: I've created a gallery for pictures I've taken of the rollergirls. There are some in there now and I'll be adding more in the future.
