SGATLien's Chinese New Year Party
Well, last night was fun. Wyspurr, holierthancow, and I piled in the car with Evil Mike and katfireblade following us out to the site of the party. We got there right around nine o' clock and were pretty much the only one's there besides the people that lived there and their cronies. So Wyspurr, holierthancow, and katfireblade wandered off to Kroger to pick up a few things and Mike and I hung around watching the people start flowing in. Unfortunately holierthancow wasn't feeling well so he decided to bail when he got back from the grocery store run.
A good number of people showed up. There were several people that I was hoping to see that didn't make it out, but a handful of my favorite people made it out so I didn't have a lack of people to talk to. The funny thing that struck me was that I've been a part of this crowd so long that there was a very low percentage of people there that I wasn't familiar with. So aside from GailStorm I really didn't meet anyone new. That was cool, though, as it let me get to know some of those that I was only passingly aquainted with a little better.
I ended up hardly drinking at all. Just one can of PBR and two Midori Sours. I just wasn't in the mood. I had just enough negative energy stewing inside me that I knew that getting intoxicated would take me in the wrong direction. So I abstained from alcohol for most of the night and just concentrated on talking and snapping pictures.
The party was fun but it wasn't anywhere nearly as good as the holiday party had been. Mardi Gras took away a lot of the real partiers for the weekend, I suspect, and the Sue/Timid situation cast a bit of a shadow on some of the core group. The party lacked verve and the people started thinning out unusually early. Still, just for the coolness of most of the people there I'd give the party a seven on the ten scale, which isn't anything to scoff at.
I do need to find a new crowd to party with, though. The SGATLiens are a great bunch and I'll always hang with them any chance I get, but as a social clique they are a little limited. One thing I found myself saying multiple times in conversations at the party was that for a bunch of people who know each other through a porn site, they're a rather conservative bunch. Not in the evil Republican sense of conservative, but rather in the reserved (in some cases even uptight) sense of conservative.
Then there's the horribly skewed male to female ratio and the fact that non-exclusively attached women are practically non-existant in the group. The problem with that isn't just that it's poor hunting grounds for trying to hook up as I'm fortunate enough not to be single and while m'lady and I like playing with others we're not particularly aggressive when it comes to seeking playmates. I'm sure many of the many single guys in the group are frustrated with that aspect, though. The only reason the gender imbalance bothers me is that it affects how the group as a whole interacts in a way too complex for me to feel like going into detail right now. Most people who spend much time observing human behavior at parties will have a general idea of what I'm talking about anyway. The short version is that I've been married too long to want to hang around that many frustrated single guys all at once nor do I enjoy the intermittant feeding frenzies that happen when a bunch of guys discover an untagged girl all at once. It's a little different in a hedonistic scene...but the SGATLiens in general, when it comes down to it, are about as hedonistic as my parents.
This is why I'm really, really looking forward to Fantasm. I have a feeling it will be a lot more like the better parties I've been at in Asheville...back before most of the good hedonists moved away. The SGATLiens are super people in their own right, but I need to find a less inhibited scene to run with if I'm to get full satisfaction from living in Atlanta.
