Dragon*Con, Day Three
Written September 6, 2004, Monday, 11:30am
I just didn't have the energy when I got home last night to write about the day so I'm doing it now. Before Danny and I headed out to the con yesterday I did a rush job on a submission request flyer for my zine. After getting to the con the first thing we did was hit the Kinkos in the Mariott. Unfortunately it wasn't open yet because it was Sunday. So he and I killed some time drinking soda from the hotel's cafe and smoking.
While smoking I ended up talking to a sixteen year old kid who was holding a nudie pin up and talking to his friend about how much grief the con staff was giving him over it. It got me off on a rant about how idiotic it was that they'd make a big issue about a photo of a naked woman when there was mostly nude sleaze all over the con.
Eventually we hit a panel. "It was the "Joy and Despair: The Art of the Author" panel with Jacqueline Carey and five other authors I didn't really know. It was an extremely helpful panel for me as an aspiring writer to learn how these published authors dealth with the frustrating aspects of being a writer.
As an aside, I have to admit that while Jacqueline Carey isn't much more attractive than most women her age I did have a bit of the hots for her. She is just such an interesting person, I guess.
After the panel we hit Kinkos. We make our copies of the flyer and the guy working the place didn't charge us. We put a few flyers at each of the flyer tables scattered around the con. I'm skeptical about whether it will do any good but I figure it can't hurt.
We followed that up with some mingling and lunch at McDonalds where a bum bugged us for money while we were eating. I went off on him. I don't mind much being asked on the street and in those cases I'll give my change, but to come in a resturant and bother me while I'm eating is crossing the line.
After lunch we hit the "Dynamic Drama: The World of Role-Playing" panel That was a mistake. I am a hardcore RPG junkie who can talk about gaming for hours on end but that panel was like watching paint dry. So painfully dull.
We met up with laputa after that and started camping the doors to the room Cruxshadows would be playing in. We waited for two hours for the doors to open and another hour for the first opener, Faith and the Muse (oh so boring). Ultimately we ended up not being able to stay for Voltaire or Cruxshadows because Danny forgot to leave Wyspurr the keys to his car so she could come pick us up, forcing us to take the last MARTA train home. I was surprisingly not too upset over missing my chance to see one of my favorite bands. I just kind of groaned and sighed and rolled with it. I was deeply disappointed bit knew it wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
