Bill Bryson--- great travel writer. my favourite book of his, though, is Mother Tongue, which is a (light-hearted) history of the English language. In terms of travel, I really enjoyed "Neither Here Nor There", probably because I did the whole interrailing thing as well

I was given "A Short History of Nearly Everything" at Christmas, but I haven't read it yet--- the hardback version looks kind of intimidating i'll probably end up buying the paperback version just so i'll actually read it--- i'm sure it's very good!!

Bill Bryson - I read Notes from a Small Island many years ago and didn't really like it. A friend was raving about it and made me read it but nope, just didn't get it.
