A piece I wrote recently, title is 'Animal One':
A boiling hot sun breaks the horizon, shattering dark serenity in trade of enlightened birth of the heartless food chain.
The plain swelters over dried chipping muddy flats, swaying parched cat tail grasses.
Who is at whose mercy? The chain stands tall with little forgiveness.
Life flourishes almost as abundantly as brushes with death, fortunes made at the swipe of a limb or a hearty spring of long, lean muscular structures, chance & fate flirt, intertwined.
A need, lifes driving force finds its prey, consumption as sacrifice in a world where perpetuation demands eradication, nourishment starvation, nature is a duelist, forever canceling itself out.
Perfect systems eons old working in harmony in the now, electric senses alert & prepare, glassy orbs locked on the slightest movement, HARD, cold stare closing to a squint.
Tracking, tracking.waiting, waiting.
Winds whip the plain in favor of a target, in favor of the hungry, rustling of drying foliage the only sounds of the scant population of the area, for stone makes not a noise
Under cover of greens and browns, crouched next to earth, every muscle set in an isometric state pending cerebral order of instantaneous acceleration, tail diabolically twisting, rolling, whipping with anticipation, with bridled urgency.
Lingual organ retracted, panting cannot be afforded in this state of acuity; all stirred dust of former idleness now settled.
A moment approaches, a window through which to leap, where maximum exertion begins & hunger potentially ends; survival of a species.
The moment train comes screaming into the station, fueled by ravenous hunger, eyes dilate to fully accept the controlled chaos at hand, muscle & tendon release their cyclical fury, hind limbs digging for traction scoop clouds of earth into once calm air.
Acceleration is instantaneous, spots undulating wrapped over muscles active with life blood pumping from a hungry wild heart, cranium and body alternating in maximum height, a see-saw of speed, in a furious gallop of natures perfect timing.
Dust trail spewing from behind the chase, drifting ever wider and longer with each violent second passing, distance is closing, tides are turning at the hands of desire & hunger.
A blur of raw speed.
A mere 15 second pursuit hanging in the time continuum with the authority of hours.
Jagged darts, obtuse abrupt turns finely balanced in an attempt to break rhythm and synchronization, escape by design, potentially making one destination into two, but to no avail.
Tag, you are it as pursuer meets pursued for the first & perhaps most peaceful time, a caress of fur on fur, a tap, a breaking of equilibrium & stride, fate at work in rare and poignant form.
Tag turns to trip, momentum & inertia of two now come to a head as one, consumption almost begins mid-air in a tumbling attack of need. There is no deceleration, only stopping with enough force to indent the earth for centuries.
Life attained and taken for a greater good, and the cycle repeats of its own volition
