I had ants in my kitchen shortly after I moved in, several years ago. I just found where they were coming in and blocked it off, and made sure all the food was cleaned up. Never had them since, and I haven't been careful. But don't feel bad for ants, they don't know they're alive and you're only shortening their lifespane by a few weeks anyway.
