Well, I get to keep my PacSun job. I am very excited about that. I had to rearrange my school scheduel so I have Tues/Thur mornings off to work. I was cool with that. I need the money, plus I really do enjoy this job.

I'm listening to acoustic Lacuna Coil right now. It is the bonus disc that comes with the re-release of Comalies. Very cool stuff on it. Her voice is amazing. The dude singer sounds a little out of place, but it is good too.

I don't really have anything else to update on. I am being really lazy today. I need to go pick up my contacts, but I just don't feel like it.

The Ugly

I can't say enough good things about this movie. Put together by the New Zealand Film Commission for about $100 dollars, The Ugly is one of the more shocking horror movies I have seen. It is shocking not for the gore but because you can almost feel the razor cuts inflicked by Simon upon his victims. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of blood (I will get to it soon) but it is the reality of the crimes that hit you over the head.

The Ugly is the story of Simon Cartwright. Simon is compelled to murder total strangers by what he refers to as the Ugly, a combination of a scarred version of himself and all of his previous victims. They give him the typically abused childhood, but it is presented in such a harse way that you almost feel abused right along with him. Simon is a hard character to sympathise with (due to his brutallity), but you can't help but almost root for him at times because of what he has been through.

Now for the blood. An interesting choice was made to not have red blood in the the film. All the blood (and there is a lot of it) is presented as almost a black oil. It looks like ink gushing out of the wounds. I can think of two reasons why they may have gone this route. The first is that the New Zealand Film Commission would not fund a film loaded with realistic gore. The answer I prefer though is that the black blood symbolizes Simon's complete detatchment to the actual killings. He becomes a cold machine to the horror. We see the movie through his eyes, and as such, the blood gains a surreal quality. Either way, it gives the film a very unique feel and look.

As far as special features, it is sadly the one part of the DVD that is lacking. It looses points because it only has a Trailer. I would love for Director Commentary on this film. Sadly, I think it will never gain the kind of following to warrent a special edition.

That is just a weird looking movie, I'll have to check that out.

Yeah, going to get school books is always an adventure. When I was a psych major it was always fun going and dropping $200-$300 for 3 books. I just felt like walking up to the counter, bending over and saying "Hi, do whatever you want to me, you always do." surreal

Hope your weekend's going well! wink
