My grandmother has cancer.

She was diagnosed as being diabetic six months ago. That has weakened her quite a bit. No she is in very bad shape because of the cancer. We found out she had it about a week and a half ago. If I had to take a guess, I would say she will no make it to July.

A running joke in my family was always that a stiff drink is called a Large Marge, named after my grandmother because of he severe alcoholism. It was commonplace for her to wake up in the morning and pour a drink within the first hour.

As a child, I would spend the night at her house every couple of months. that stopped when she went off the road while driving drunk with my cousin in the front seat.

Her husband, Marvin, used to mentally and physically abuse his three step-children (Mom, Leslie, and Stacy). A favorite game of his was to "mistakenly" walk in on my teen-age mother while she was in the shower. After my parents were married, he once asked my father if it were ok for him to fuck my mother. I can't stand to even be in the same room as him. All the while, Marge's way of coping was the bottle.

Now she is dying, and to be honest with all of you, I am not sure how I feel about that.

Without getting TOO personal, I'll just say my great grandmother was not a nice woman. She didn't raise my grandfather properly, her sister (my great aunt) did, and THAT is a woman worthy of sainthood. I don't care how funny my friends look, she's 85 years old and every time she meets them she says "they're so cute" or "they're so beautiful." Anyway, when the great grandmother had a stroke and was laying in a hospital bed with a blank look in her eyes, not recognizing anything (and eventually dying without the support of machines) all I could think was that it finally came around to her and she died the way she left everyone in her life feeling, alone. It sounds horrible, but one day it does come back to you, and I sort of felt bad that I didn't feel a thing when she passed. But then I realized she never made me feel love, so it was like a stranger had died. So don't feel weird about this... I think we all need something at some point, in order to feel something back. <3

ps - I dunno if we'll come through Kansas, I think by that point we'll be feurther south, driving through Texas. But if we do I'll contact you. smile
