So I went to see Dead Can Dance at Humphrey's Concerts in San Diego on the 27th. After reading the reviews, I'm really glad I picked San Diego instead of Hollywood. It had about 1,300 people, as opposed to the 13,000 in Hollywood, which made it seem a lot more friendly, like we all knew each other. They were also a much nicer audience in San Diego, apparently.

We got a premium room package, which made it even better. We didn't have to drive home at midnight, the food was fantastic, and the hotel was great too, though I think I liked the outside a little more than I liked the inside (especially when all the torches were lit). It looked kind of like a bunch of mastless ships all stuck together. Getting a room package also meant we got to sit right in the middle of the third row. Yay!

Lisa looked better than she ever did before, at least from where I was sitting. She was wearing this yellow robe, which was cool, though it looked kind of like a raincoat. Brendan looks like Peter Gabriel now.

The show itself was just amazing. The first two songs even made Klyde cry...
Here's the set list, which I found online:
* Nierika (Link goes to an MP3 of the Dublin performance)
* Saffron
* Compassion (Yamyinar?)
* The Ubiquitous Mr. Lovegrove
* The Love That Cannot Be
* The Lotus Eaters
* Crescent
* Minus Sanctus
* Saltarello
* The Wind That Shakes The Barley
* How Fortunate The Man With None
* Dreams Made Flesh
* I Can See Now
* American Dreaming
* Sanvean
* Rakim

Encore 1
* Black Sun
* Salem's Lot
* Yulunga

Encore 2
* Severance
* Hymn For The Fallen

We stood up and applauded for about five minutes for each encore.

The audience kept shouting "thank you" and proclaiming their love for Brendan and Lisa, which was really sweet though somewhat annoying, and at one point this one woman shouted "you are the gods of song, through you the dead can dance and the living...something something." Also nice but annoying. Several audience members kept doing this weird trance-bellydancing thing, and a lot of people were doing zaghareets...a sound I've gotten very used to over the years, seeing what kinds of events I tend to go to...and, of course, the fact that my mom is a former bellydancer. Klyde estimated that about 1/8th of the audience was on drugs. The rest of us knew that you don't need drugs to see Dead Can Dance, they're trippy enough as it is. As Brendan said, "This is really a funky crowd!"

An audience member shouted "play some country!" right before "I Can See Now" and so Brendan and the bassist did a little country riff. That was hilarious, as were the silly faces Brendan made at some of the audience members (probably the ones that kept shouting that they loved him). He also gave a silly introduction to Saltarello ("this song was on the top ten in 1461"). From the reviews, it seems he was being particularly joke-y during this show, probably because a lot of his family was there.

Once there was a really loud plane-boom from the naval base next door, which terrified me (I hate planes!) and apparently Lisa too, but the audience reassured her. ("It's okay, it's just a plane," etc.) Klyde reassured me by saying, "it's okay, the plane can't get in. It doesn't have a ticket." tongue

Some people said that there were some guys being annoying on the boats (the venue was right next to the harbor), but I didn't notice that. I did notice when a string broke on Lisa's dulcimer, though.

The two of them kept traveling between instruments during the show, making me think "they can play that one too?" each time, and Brendan played a hurdy-gurdy a couple times. biggrin

I was going to buy a shirt, but I forgot. frown I got to see the band's room out our window, though. That was pretty awesome.

Also, I was probably the youngest one there. blush

That's all I can think of for now. Klyde and I both had the whole day off, so we went shopping in Old Town beforehand and we bought some 10-sided dice for me for when I start playing Exalted with the group. We hung out in Presidio Park and Bookstar for a while too, and we were going to go visit my grandpa but he wasn't home. We had to leave pretty early the next morning, but it all worked out anyway.

All in all, it was the best day ever.
