M57 is known for its extremely high dynamic range, with the interior several times brighter than the outer shell. This makes it hard to process in its own right, but those who take the time usually find a brilliant red outer glow of expanding gas. Not so in this case, to my surprise. The redness usually obtained with a Hydrogen Alpha filter also includes the ionized Nitrogen band (NII) which is missing from the stronger 3nm filters used here. Wikipedia tells us why: "All the interior parts of this nebula have a blue-green tinge that is caused by the doubly ionized oxygen emission lines at 495.7 and 500.7 nm. These observed so-called "forbidden lines" occur only in conditions of very low density containing a few atoms per cubic centimeter. In the outer region of the ring, part of the reddish hue is caused by hydrogen emission at 656.3 nm, forming part of the Balmer series of lines. Forbidden lines of ionized nitrogen or [N II] contributes to the reddishness at 654.8 and 658.3 nm"Fun surprise!

The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth. This image shows the difference between the colour components as observable by the human eye (red, green, blue) and filters that isolate the emission wavelengths of ionized Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur particles. The page on flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/joelkuiper/45570507892/ shows the mosaic

Good one to vent a bit. I'm 30 now, living in the Netherlands, and dropped out of a PhD in epidemiology/bioinformatics to work remotely for a company in the US. This has been great. Pay is wonderful, approx 130k/year. My official title is something like Senior Data Scientist. I work mostly on the application of machine learning and natural language processing to clinical study data....

I feel like I'm dealing w similar shit. It sucks!! And I'm the same way; not a morning person and need my own space to do my own work. I feel you on climate change and environmental shit too, I want to do something but idk what.
