I think they put up with it because it can be that they'll be terrified to be alone at their age and no other source of help or it's a kind of misunderstood loyalty thinking it's part and parcel or I suspect because they were abused earlier or their Mum/them in turn was abused by a violent father.

Generally speaking, people are the way they are because they are foolish and frightened.
(not you or I of course) The story about the father is typical. He yells at the kid, then blames the kid for it. If the kid has a problem with touching or dropping things, there certainly is a better way to handle it. That father's father probably treated him the same way, so in turn he treats his kid and probably his wife in that mannor. His wife was likely treated that way by her parents so she sought that out in a spouse, and now after a lifetime of being treated poorly, she hasn't the courage to stick up for herself. Now the kid who was yelled at will likely grow up and treat the people in his life the same way. It is a viscious cycle.
Be thankful that it is behind you, and remain aware of it for the times in your life when things aren't so bright.
