I'm leaving for Memphis for a week tomorrow, where I'll be pretty much without internet.

Things to ponder while I'm away:

Do I need a cat?
We had a new, very enthusiastic neighbor move in today. She's got a two year old kid, and a cat with a litter of ten kittens. Having a cat again would be nice, but do I really want to clean a litter box? Especially because we're thinking about kids in the next few years, I'm thinking it might not be the best idea.

Do I want to have kids with the state of the world today?
I'm almost positive I don't want to enroll my kids in public schools with the state they're in today. Don't get me wrong, my dad is a public school teacher. I respect and admire many public school teachers. But No Child Left Behind has taken all the joy out of public classrooms, and teaching to the test is a waste of time. Without a passion for learning, all the tests in the world won't do any good.

When did I become so jaded?
I don't know why I automatically assume the new neighbor is on meth. She's very upbeat, she talks very quickly, but she's also really, really nice. She came over and introduced herself first thing. She brought us flowers, for God's sake. She didn't even comment on what a giant mess my house is, with boxes and books covering every available inch. She even got the Secret of Nimh reference from my rat terrier's name right off the bat, which is always a good sign. But she stood in our living room talking, and all I could think was, "how much meth does this chick do in a day?"

How good are The White Stripes?
Really fucking good.

Do the tears of retarded girls really make the best lube?
That one's courtesy of my husband.

I looked after my sisters cat recently, and I have to conclude that cleaning out a litter tray is never worthwhile. there agian, my sister's cat is a rescue cat, and expresses love/gratitude/boredom/hunger/most emotions through violence, so I might be unnecessarily jaded.

I'm telling you, as your old lady friend, who waited for the world to get better, or myself to be richer, but who has to admit that-- by the time those come, your eggs are too old and believe me, by that time, you don't have the energy to chase little ones around. You lose the naivety you need-- to not realize how overwhelming it could be. Not to mention having to take extra good care of one's self so that you won't die before your kid makes it to college. Take it from the wife of a man who spent his childhood and twenty's taking care of dying parents, who didn't have the opportunity to have his life, because they needed help.

Yeah, don't wait. If you never take another piece of advice from me, ever, please take this one. As far as home schooling--it's not that bad until the kid's in 7th grade anyway...until then you can get support from specialists and other parents who home school. That's what I'm going to do, if i get the chance.
