For the skeptic, there is one event in life that brings tremendous pleasure: the discovery of self-deception.

This week, I have become aware of a systematic distortion in my thinking, a tendency to neglect certain facts while latching onto others. This distortion has had tremendous practical consequences, and has shaped my actions in a negative way.

Now that I am aware of this distortion--I wouldn't...

Their beauty is lit from the inside.

Also, TammyRiot really should reach 1000 comments! She is an expressionist painting come to life, for heaven's sake!

I am excited because I made an appointment for my new tattoo!

Very simple: "amor fati" on the inside of my right forearm. The script will be classic typewriter.

This is one of Nietzsche's favorite phrases, and that is why I am getting it! Also, the concept of the love of fate means a great deal to me, especially since I am very skeptical of...

I was just reading about free will in a book called "The Moral Landscape". It is interesting to consider how many of our actions are driven by chemical impulses and spontaneous ideas that pop into our head. How many times have we done or said something and immediately thought afterwards, "Why did I do that?" This seems to happen even more frequently in stressful situations.

This post is dedicated to Nietzsche.

How well he knew that those who exhort others to sacrifice their self-interest are to be feared and loathed most of all.

One of the things I detest about my profession is that there are "experts" in comfortable, prosperous sinecures who make a living exhorting my colleagues to sacrifice ever more, and when we balk, they accuse us of...

Nietzsche rocks.
I started running months ago. Away from my butt. Away from my "crazies".
Away from my sleeping troubles.
It helps !

I must accept my nature. This is sometimes hard.

In the end, I love my species. Is this a dysfunctional relationship?

The true object of skepticism may be to get us out of our heads and into the world. This is not to say that the world of ideas is unimportant, but rather it is always incomplete. We must head into the world each day looking for something that does not fit the patterns in our head.smilesmile

P.S. Another post about skepticism! I should have put...

I am going with Nebuchadnezzar's suggestion! Maybe I should up the ante: the post should read, "Warning, extremely graphic photos."

Skepticism is a kind of mental porn!

I should be working, but I am to tired to force myself to do paperwork this evening!

Clearly, adapting the ancient skepticism of Pyrrho and Sextus Empiricus to modern life is a major concern of mine. Unfortunately, the lack of certain conceptual tools stymied their development of a subtle skepticism.

I have been working on such a skepticism for ten years, and I am beginning...

I think the temptation to formulate unwarranted generalizations pulls us all in from time to time. The trick is to realize when it's happening, something I've often struggled with myself. wink

In loving what is noble and beautiful, we see the world as it truly is.

Without the love of the noble, we can never see what is in front of us.

Without the love of the beautiful that is outside of us, we can never see the beauty that is in us.
