Perhaps, it is time to reinterpret the concept of Original Sin?
We are not evil by nature evil but flawed and vulnerable, and our failure to deal with these flaws leads to evil, both the commission of evil and the transformation of our character into an embodiment of evil.

I've been wondering lately if truly evil people deserve our pity more than our scorn. Was Jeffrey Dahmer evil by choice or did he just have really bad genetics and upbringing? What makes a psychopath a psychopath?
Perhaps, the only response is found in Greek Tragedy: the universe is indifferent to whether we are "responsible" for our crimes. For transgression there is retribution.
