You can make live bookmark in firefox that will read xml or rss feeds.

just get the .rss address of a news site and click on bookmarks at the top, manage bookmarks and file.
New live bookmark will bring up a prompt, just copy and paste the address there.

Whalla, you can check rss feeds.
