Interesting talk I had today with some other artist in out Latin American Art Survey:
First, we all had the same thought, that why the fuck wasn't Haiti or the rest of the Caribbean included in the book. It covered Mexico down to Argentina, including Brazil, which is really an ex portuguese colony and Cuba, Puerto Rico, and DOminican Republic of the Caribbean. Many people danced around it, then one person, an African painter I respect went on the about color. But I said one thing though: "It's no doubt racism that places those nations outside, but it' probably an old established one"
One fire Down.
The we spoke of how Haitian art was seen as primitive, and how this was an insult in some sense. I strictly said, that being marked "Primitive" does not mean your some idiot. It should be worn as a badge of honor frankly. Simplicity is the hardest thing to accomplish so that tis a culture as whole within their art field can stay within realms, not in the sense of media or medium but that of execution, it is a bonus. If anything the Avant Gar-de and the Bourgeois are more full of shit as art here than there is in other places.
Two fire down.
Now here was an interesting [parable we started to talk about, in the sense of the immigrant experience and the world around it. In spanish that is the word
Ilusion vs. Illusion
Ilusion, which is Illusion in English.
Now see in spanish Ilusion mean hope while in english it is to rick' or deceive. or be under a false belief. When we talk about the immigrant experience, these words seem to apply ( especially coming from what i've seen as Cuban/Mexican Hybrid)
While Ilusion, in spanish means hope, or to dream. If this words route is in latin, and esessentially is the same thing how did it change between 2 cultures and how is it changing now with the globalizaion and immigration of the world going on now.
Super interesting to me, super interesting.
I have a PDA now so I can't be punk anymore.

You did give me a Graphic Smash comp. It works and everything--I've spent the past week working on my final projects, which that story is a part of. It's called Space Boy vs. Alterna-Girl. I've looked at Vigil a little bit, but I'll really be able to dig into the site after my projects are due this Thursday. Then it's three weeks of rewrites, submissions, and comics--then school starts again.
I talked to another artist I'm working with and we want to get a table at San Diego this year. You're more than welcome to come along--we can TAKE OVER THE WORLD.
