OK, Mike Watt and the Secondmen played in Portland last night (on my b-day) and it was totally amazing. I mean, it was seriously incredible. Those guys were all great musicians, and the songs were so bad ass. They got totally polyrhythmic and atonal. Fuck yes it was great.

OK, so I had to go to work for two hours, but I'm blowin off my classes today so I can go back to bed.

OK, as part of my survey, how many hours of sleep do you need to function?

I need at least 5 to make it through the day, 6 to feel half way decent, but 7 is perfect.

Regarding the Watt show:

With Watt was pete mazich (hammond b3) and jerry trebotic (drums). You see, these guys were excellent musicians, they were constantly looking at eachother and listening to eachother so they could be totally responsive and speak through their instruments. The drummer was fast and was perfectly on time. He threw in a lot of funk shuffles which really made Watt's bass lines feel... well, it made me want to dance, I want to say upbeat, but his lines are so complex too.

Anyway, the organ layed a nice foundation, with some very atonal solos. Often Watt and the organ would sort of trade brief rhythmic lines over a funk shuffle drum thing. These lines were brief spurts of totally "trippy" and atonal but seemingly melodic energy. The thing that made it all work was that they were tight, you could really hear the silent spaces during the song, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I can't wait to see him again.
