Actually, if you really stop to think about it, Thanksgiving is celebrated as a national holiday, but it should mroe or less be a day of mourning. Not to be a downer, but it was dinner that served as the beginning of the end of Native American civilization. Within roughly a couple of hundred years, US genocide decmiated roughly 99% of the indigienous peoples of North America.
However, though, the truth as is often the case was lost in the reconstructionist point of view. In per capita terms, what the US did during the 19th century was arguably as egregious as Stalin and Hitler did to the Jews during the early 2oth century.
