I think you hit it on the head with #1. Most people vote on their gut feeling, based on the image the candidate projects. Kerry came across like your favorite college professor---reserved, intelligent, and a little bit arrogant. For me that would have been reason enough to vote for him, but I can see how it would turn off a great many people. Whereas Bush is everyone's drunken frathouse pal---which turns ME off, but apparently appeals to the majority of Americans.
