bangkok is just a good compression / decompression zone from western culture. Hang out there for a day or two when you get there. see the grand palace. eat street orange juice and street pad thai. then GET THE HELL OUT.

Go to the islands. Koh Phangan and stay on the full moon beach. amazing party every night. beautiful beach. warm water.

go Koh Tao if you like diving. I never had done it but believe me when I say that's the place to do it.

I want to go to phuket and the andaman sea but I didn't get to. Those are also south. Go north if you want to see waterfalls and elephants.

Then at the end of the trip head back to bangkok and do a day of shopping. Preferably at the weekend market. Buy shit to give yourself and other people.

When I went there I was just planning on bangkok. but it's so cheap to hop around thailand and seriously a trip to just bangkok is a wasted trip. See if you can get over to Cambodia. It's right there. Talk at a travel place and ask them how to get a visa (it's not hard). I would have killed to see Angkor Wat and i have to go back because i missed it.
