It is true. Some leaders will inspire, form and shape those whom they lead. There are others who, as pure power figures, may command and control others, but they will neither inspire them nor influence them. Seldom will they touch them deeply.
Simply having power and responsibility does not make a real leader. I suspect that the real value of the many relationships you have created lies in the fact that you have influenced others, not merely commanded them, and in the fact that they in turn will be leaders who can influence and inspire other people.
We have a responsibility to hew out of ourselves the mature adults. When Jesus tells us to be "perfect," I am quite sure that He means that if we have made the most of the very singular and never-to-be-duplicated, personalities, brains and emotional networks that we have received; in short, if we have done our best with what he gave us, then we are indeed "perfect." the point is, that to do all this, we often need inspiration and assistance. Good leaders give us both.
