About a week ago a friend of mine had a relative that passed. Her aunt. They were not close. I said, "Oh, I'm sorry."
Yesterday a friend said that her cat died. I responded, "Oh, I'm sorry."
The response to me BOTH times was--"It's ok, it wasn't your fault."
REALLY? WTF does that even MEAN? Oh, THANK YOU! I was SOOO worried that your aunt who I have never seen or your cat who, well, I really couldn't care less about, I SOMEHOW caused them to DIE! Yes, THANK YOU for putting me at ease. I thought somehow the monkey's paw I made a wish on and the million dollars I just found had caused the recent slew of deaths around me.
Can someone PLEASE explain how this response makes sense? Did they ACTUALLY think that I somehow thought I had in some way murdered either of these individuals? How about when someone says "Sorry" when you tell them about bad news you say, "Thank you." Instead of somehow implying you could have been involved in their passing. Is there ANY WAY this makes sense at all?
