.I live in a small college town where things are genrally nice and clean. People feel safe walking around at all hours and its generally ok. But something savage happened this week that sort of burst our little bubble.This girl that I had met a couple of times, a friend of an aquaintance, dropped off the face of the earth last week and they found her today.
Today I'm really wishing for werewolves. Usually, one of the prime arguments I cite against blind religeous belief is Joeseph Campbell's Idea of Metaphor Vs. History. I'd like to forget that for a moment. We laugh at people in earlier times for believing in monsters and demons. But tonight I'm realizing the importance of monsters. I think that in earlier times and in earlier places it wasn't that there weren't terrible people doing terrible destructive to other people. But I think it's much easier and more convienient to belive that some supernatural entity is carrying out unspeakable unthinkable acts than that man walking down the street next to you. You can guard against demons, you can carry an amulet or say a prayer to rebuke them and if they eat you or do something vicious to you then you couldn't stop it. Monsters are the other they are not part of your community.They are not a reflection of you, you don't interact with them. I guess right now I'd rather blame a monster than a contractor from Richmond.
