She was lost in the crowd. Ducking and twirling, trying to avoid those too tall to notice her, and too hurried to care if she got in their way. She was frantic to find a way out. All she could see was the human forms swimming about eachother as they went their separate way, so deliberate.
She knew she needed to get out. The colors swirled about her in a frenzied array, and she felt the current tugging her under. She gasped and pulled, against what she knew not, but she fought to keep her head above it all. There were no faces to the bodies rushing past all about her; they were just that, bodies, and doing just that, rushing. It seemed as if she had become trapped, so she stopped her struggle to formulate a new plan.
As she stood in the middle of the chaos, not one person ran into her, not even tapped her shoulder, or accidentally hit her with a swinging bag on their way by. She watched them swarm about, melding into eac hother, making her dizzy.
Then it occurred to her that she didn't know why she had to get out, nor did she know where she would go if she did. She also wondered, if all these other people knew where they were going, and why they were in such a hurry to get there. She thought that maybe these were very important people, with very important jobs to do, and perhaps they were on a deadline. Though, she supposed, we're all on a deadline.
As she observed, the crowd never seemed to get any smaller, and their movements about each other took on an almost rhythmic motion. Once she noticed this, she could see that they were not rushing at all, but dancing. They were dancing. Hand in hand they span their partners about the marbled floor, only to fall, laughing, once again into each other's arms.
She longed to dance as well, and eyed the crowd for someone else who may be in search of a partner. Dismally, she realized that there if there was someone, they were probably having just as much trouble finding her as she was finding them.
She decided that she could dance solo for a time, perhaps that way she could follow the flow of the crowd and possibly find a partner in the process. However, it became obvious that this was a couples dance, and the intricate moves would be impossible to imitate with only two feet.
She thought again of trying to fight her way out, but she longed to stay and watch the dance, even as her heart grew heavy with envy. She was lost in the crowd, unable to be one with them, but unable to escape.
