saw Inland Empire yesterday evening. holy shit. that was an incredible hell-ride of a film. i think Lynch reached the pinnacle of multiple themes he's been working with for years with this one. it was completely disorienting, visually mesmerizing and filled with an immense amount of sustained dread. plus a few absolutely terrifying moments.
i loved it. Laura Dern is on camera for a good 90% of the film, and gives an astonishing performance. if any of you Chicago kids are halfway interested in this film, you should do yourself a favor and catch it at The Music Box while it is in town. the classic old-school theater setting only added to the experience for me...
stayed out with FritzKD drinking and decompressing until 1am or so afterwards - it was good to have someone to slowly start to sort through the ideas and images that it left me with. then it took me an hour and a half to get home, since i didn't want to spend money on a taxi, and he lives waaaay the fuck up on the northside. but i had good iPod time the whole way home and it wasn't all that frigid out, so it was OK.
now i've got to go get some final things done before heading out to swap CD mixes and drink beer with the good people of SGChicago. i love sharing music with people, so i love these CD exchanges we do. lots of new folks are supposed to come out tonight too, which is always great. i had a really cool theme to work with for my mix, and i know there were some other great ones floating around out there, so i'm looking forward to see what people have come up with...
oh, and thanks for your responses on my year-end list, people. i appreciated hearing what your favorites were, too - there's some i'm going to have to track down.
have a good saturday night y'all, whatever you're doing!

As far as Inland Empire...
I've only seen a few David Lynch movies. Some I really enjoyed (Lost Highway, Eraserhead), but some just left me feeling like I wasn't "in on it" (Fire Walk with Me). Does this one fall into the first category, or should I just save my money and watch Bring it on again?
