it's fucking wednesday and i can't wait for the weekend already. feel like i'm running on fumes, and i'm not having much luck with the second wind these days - at least not for anything worthwhile.
broke down in a depressed mess friday night in front of some friends i haven't seen in a while - not even sure how or why at this point, and i feel a bit embarrassed but - ah, hell - maybe it purged something before it got uglier. i don't know. reference points and handholds are slippery these days.
anyway. i am currently just listening to the warm rain outside, watching it glisten in the streetlight, and soothing my cloudy, troubled mind with the sweet sounds of Gamble & Huff.

word up to Akira - you bigging up yr city in yr last journal helped send me here tonight. old Philly soul goes down smooth when the surroundings are rough, and from the late 60's through the late 70's, this songwriting/production team put out some of the best.

i'm a fan of the bigger artists they worked with like the Intruders, the O'Jays and especially Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, but let me share some select gems from lesser-known names...
Expressway To Your Heart - The Soul Survivors - this was their first hit back in 1967. i can't get enough of the traffic sounds, the raw vocals, and the sweet breakdown - much too crowded, much too crowded...
Slow Motion (Part 1) - Johnny Williams - sexy as hell, with a tumbling bass line and horns punching in and out. hard not to move with this song.
Drowning In The Sea Of Love - Joe Simon - has those great blaxploitation strings and wah-wah guitar, and Simon has a vocal like rich cognac. CocoabutteR, if you're listening, something tells me you'd dig this one.
Regina - Bunny Sigler - in my eyes? one of the most romantic songs of all time. just a hard-working man calling his lady to tell her he'll be home soon. it's kind of corny at points, but it's real. and good lord, when his voice hits those high notes - oooh, i always get the shivers... Regina - I got my suitcase and all of my clothes...
this has cheered me up and energized me doing this, y'all. i hope you grab a couple of these songs and enjoy them yourself.
