it's raining in my head
but no tears come down
and i'm dreaming of you
until sleep comes around
sleep comes down sleep comes down
sleep comes down sleep comes down
the orchestra's playing
it's so very loud
and i'm biting my nails
until sleep comes around
sleep comes down sleep comes down
sleep comes down sleep comes down
the clouds are all running
but no tears come down
and i'm thinking of you
until sleep comes around
sleep comes down sleep comes down
sleep comes down sleep comes down
-Sleep Comes Down by The Psychedelic Furs
I have developed an odd fascination as a result of reading a ny times article today about a blog called The Grocery List Collection. It's pretty self-explanatory: a guy collects abandoned grocery lists from all over, and puts images of them up on his blog.
I'm not sure what it is that I find so interesting. It's a combination of things I think. There's the sheer mundane reassuring monotony of it all: list after list, with only slight variations on the universal theme of consumption and trying to organize the chaos of one's life. Sure, the paper's different, the hands and ink vary, but the need is the same.
I read on and on. I tried to imagine the people who scrawled these collections of things. In some ways, I was looking for familiar choices, anonymous list writers I could relate to. At other points, I boggled at the odd little window a particular list gave me into a life I'd never know. And jesus, how many people buy that Febreze crap? Does the upholstery of north america really lack in freshness?
I finished up by noticing I'd pulled an address off a piece of ripped up notebook paper, an old grocery list of mine was on top: lightbulbs (with a line next to it indicating I'd failed to procure them) pigstuff (again a line), toilet paper (procured!), tampons (got those), Qtips (done!) and dish soap. black pen on a plain white lined paper with shreds of holes from the spiral spine sticking out.
my life reduced to products.
